ക്രിസ്തുമതം പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുന്നതിനായി A.D.
History of Kadamattom Church
To spread Christianity, in the 4th century AD, a father with the rank of Metropolitan named Mar Abo came to India from Nineveh (Persia), Iraq. Although he traveled to many lands to spread the Christian faith, he could not do much due to the rigidity of the caste and religious systems of that time. One evening on his travels, he arrived in the land of Kadamattom. Exhausted from the long journey, the father entered the humble hut of an old widow to satisfy his hunger and spend the night. In that hut, there were only the mother and her son. Although they lovingly welcomed the father, who had different attire and language, the mother and son, who had been starving for days, could not offer anything to Mar Abo. Understanding the situation, the father asked the old woman to light a fire and put water on for porridge. When the water boiled, Mar Abo took a single grain of rice from the empty rice basket, prayed, and put it in the pot. In moments, the pot was boiling over with rice. The mother and son, who ate to their heart's content, realized that a divine person had arrived in their hut.
At that time, the only daughter of the local ruler, the 'Aayakkunnathu Kartha,' was suffering from severe mental distress due to demonic possession and was bound in chains. The treatments of doctors and sorcerers had no effect. The old widow, realizing that a divine person had come to her hut, spoke to Mar Abo about her master's daughter's illness. The next morning, she took the father to the ruler, the Aayakkunnathu Kartha. Through the power of Mar Abo's prayers, the ruler's daughter's mental distress was completely healed, and the ruler and his family converted to Christianity. The satisfied ruler, understanding Mar Abo's wish, built a church in the name of the Holy Virgin Mary and gave it as a gift. This is the Kadamattom Valiya Pally (Great Church) established by Mar Abo. Many who realized that many miracles were happening through the father's prayers converted to Christianity. The ruler gave the father a wealth of cattle and the widow's son as an assistant. The widow's son converted to Christianity and became a deacon named Paulose.
One day, while Deacon Paulose was in the forest grazing cows, he was captured by cannibalistic cave dwellers in the deep forest. It was customary for the cave dwellers to kill, share, and eat anything caught from the forest with the permission of the forest chief. Realizing that the cave dwellers would kill him, the deacon prayed earnestly to God. The chief, feeling compassionate, did not allow the deacon to be killed and accepted him as one of them. Realizing that the deacon was trustworthy and honest, the chief wished to make him his heir. The deacon learned all the magic, sorcery, and high sorcery from the chief, which one needed to know to become the chief of the cave dwellers. The chief's desire to marry his daughter to the deacon and make him his heir pained the deacon. The deacon informed the chief that he could never live as a cannibal chief in a cave and that he had a strong desire to see his mother and Mar Abo. Understanding this, the cave dwellers placed the deacon under guard. After a long time, as there was no change of heart, the chief gave silent permission for the deacon to return. However, since it was difficult for the chief to break the laws of the cave dwellers for the deacon's sake, he made the deacon swear that he would not teach anything he learned from the cave to the outside world, and advised him to escape in the dead of night by putting the guards to sleep. The deacon used the magic he learned from the chief to put the guards to sleep, escaped from the cave, and traveled towards Kadamattom Church. The cave dwellers, realizing the deacon had escaped, chased after him to capture him. As dawn approached, the deacon reached the front of the locked church and prayed to the Holy Virgin Mary. The locked door opened on its own, and the deacon entered the church. The cave dwellers, enraged that they could not take the deacon back, struck the church wall with the iron chain they were carrying. As day began to break and the deacon was inside the church, the cave dwellers returned in disappointment.
Mar Abo, who was overjoyed to have the deacon, whom he loved and raised as his own son, back, ordained him as a priest and gave him full charge of Kadamattom. The father informed Father Paulose that his mission was to preach Christianity and therefore he was leaving Kadamattom. Father Paulose, who was deeply saddened to be separated from the father, discouraged his journey. Mar Abo, understanding Father Paulose's sorrow, put his signet ring on Father Paulose's hand. He gave Father Paulose a boon, saying, "The moment this ring falls off, I will have passed away, and if you take the ring back and set out in search of me, you will be able to reach me," and then Mar Abo departed from Kadamattom.
Mar Abo, who set out from Kadamattom to preach Christianity, reached Thevalakkara in Kollam. There he stayed with a Hindu family and taught them ophthalmology. That family and the local people converted to Christianity, and a church was built there in the name of the Holy Virgin Mary. That church is known as the Thevalakkara St. Mary's Orthodox Church. The family that learned ophthalmology from Mar Abo is the famous Thevalakkara eye doctors.
One day, the signet ring worn by Father Paulose fell off, and understanding its meaning, the priest set out in search of his master. Traveling a long distance, Father Paulose reached the tomb of Mar Abo on the northwest side of the Madbaha of Thevalakkara St. Mary's Church. Deeply saddened that he could not see his master's mortal body, Father Paulose knelt at his master's tomb and prayed. The master's right hand separated from the tomb and rose up. Father Paulose, happy that his master had acknowledged his presence, brought the raised right hand of his master back to Kadamattom with reverence, interred it in the south wall of the Valiya Pally's Madbaha, and established a Persian Cross there.
The miraculous events of Father Paulose, using the divine powers learned from his master Mar Abo and the skills learned from the cave chief to eradicate the demonic forces that stood against the good of society, are endless. Father Paulose was also known as the Kadamattathu Kathanar. Kadamattom Church is a refuge for the destitute. A special offering known as the "Kadamattom Sampradayam" (Kadamattom Tradition) also continues. The mortal remains of Kadamattathu Kathanar (Father Paulose) are interred inside the Kadamattom Valiya Pally on the north side. Kadamattom Church, founded by Mar Abo in the name of the Holy Virgin Mary, was later rededicated in the name of St. George, the Martyr. The church built later on the site where Father Paulose (who became Kadamattathu Kathanar) was born and raised is the Poyedam Pally. The Poyedam Pally is located 150 meters northeast of the Valiya Pally. Adjacent to the Poyedam Pally on the north side is the 'Poyedam Kinar' (Poyedam Well).
